In accordance with current standards, power drive systems, control systems and sensors with integrated safety functions must exhibit withstand higher immunity to electromagnetic phenomena (electromagnetic compatibility, EMC).

Different EMC standards apply here, according to the product group. In addition, the electromagnetic compatibility of functionally safe electronic components is tested differently to that of standard components. The integral safety function for example must not fail dangerously under the influence of electromagnetic interference (often at an elevated test level). Extensive and thorough monitoring of the EUT (Equipment Under Test) is required for this purpose, in order for critical failures to be detected.

The Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) provides information on this subject that describes the requirements of the current EMC standards, permits classification of the product, and explains performance of the EMC test in practical terms, including all problems and obstacles.
