Production of a guide for companies to the application of acceptance and tolerance values for hazardous substances

Project No. IFA 0020

Status:

completed 12/2012

Aims:

The risk based concept, which is presented in the BekGS910 hazardous substances announcement for the purpose of industry trials, contains exposure-risk relationship formulated by the AGS Committee for Hazardous Substances for a growing number of carcinogenic and mutagenic substances. Tolerable and acceptable concentrations for the assessment of exposure in industrial practice are published in the BekGS910. Application of these values during risk assessments presents companies with new challenges, for example with regard to the measurability of very low concentrations, estimation of exposure, and consideration of ubiquitous background exposure levels. Companies require guidance on these issues.

Activities/Methods:

Data relevant to conditions in the field and information gained through the consulting and research activity of the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the Social Accident Insurance (IFA) and the statutory accident insurance institutions are compiled in a compact and readily comprehensible form suitable for their provision to companies. Experts at the social accident insurance institutions are also involved in this activity.

Results:

Material data sheets for use in the field have been produced for the following substances listed in the BekGS910 announcement: Acrylamide Acrylonitrile Aluminium silicate fibres Asbestos Benzo[a]pyrene in certain PAH mixtures 1,3-Butadiene Ethylene oxide 4,4'-Methylene dianiline Trichloroethene
