Method for measurement of glycolic acid n-butyl ester

Project No. BIA 2050

Status:

completed 11/2002

Aims:

In member companies of the institution for statutory accident insurance and prevention in the textile and clothing industry, adhesives chiefly containing the solvent glycolic acid n-butyl ester are employed for the flocking of textiles. No suitable method currently existed for assessment of the atmospheric concentration of this substance at the workplace.

Activities/Methods:

A procedure was evaluated with which both individual and stationary measurements are possible. The sampling medium is activated charcoal. The analytic determination is performed by gas chromatography after desorption with methanol, carbon disulfide and dichloromethane (5/35/60). The detection limit comes to 2.5 mg/m³ for a sampling time of two hours.

Results:

The procedure meets the requirements of DIN EN 482 "Workplace atmospheres - general requirements for the performance of procedures for the measurement of chemical agents" and can since December 2002 be used as a standard within the BG-measurement system for hazardous substances (BGMG). Standard working instructions are available.
